Apple touts 2 million iPads sold but the video is awful

Apple is claiming bragging rights on selling the 2 millionth iPad. We are less than impressed by the video performance on ours. Why is the media hiding the big flaw in the iPad?

We’re going to spend the week looking at the things Apple says it’s good at: 1) watching videos, 2) thin and portable, 3) running apps, and 4) connect anywhere anytime. Everyone needs to decide for themselves if this is a “must have” or useless gadget.

We’re going to cut through the clutter with some real hands on experience and a few tips. Without doubt, this is not a great device for browsing videos.

The Best Way to Experience…videos. Hands Down

That’s the claim on Apple’s website. Apple is also insisting all videos be H.264 compatible which means no Flash videos. Essentially that means browsing videos from YouTube or purchasing them at the iTunes Store.

Forget the politics, does this work for the best video experience hands down? The answer is not yet.

Apple has implemented a sub-standard 3G chip according to some analysts and the result is awful videos seen on an iPad. AT&T Takes No Blame For iPad 3G Video Problems “My youtube videos are kinda out of focus” MacRumors Forum

The main source to browse H.264 compatible videos is YouTube who converted to this “emerging standard.” H.264 takes more bandwidth to send the same quality picture as Flash. Since Apple appears to have used a lower power chip, YouTube throttles the video it sends to the iPad.

The results vary from unwatchable to horrible. The only short term solution is turning off 3G and watching YouTube videos on Wi-Fi. If you want to watch videos away from home, you’ll have to buy them.

You could convert your existing videos to Apple’s format but that’s a lot of work. I thought the iPad was supposed to make life fun.

CBC - The International Olympic Committee has ordered a P.E.I. blogger to remove a video of the death of a Georgian luger from his website.

Nodar Kumaritashvili, 21 of Georgia, died during a training run Feb. 12, just hours before the Olympic opening ceremonies. Stephen Pate, publisher of the online site NJN Network, published the video along with commentary about the death, and the IOC has since ordered him in an email to take it down.

The email states the IOC owns the rights to all images of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, and only licensed broadcasters can use them. Pate said he won’t remove the video, because Canada’s Copyright Act allows the use of copyrighted material as part of a news story.

“One of the rights is for news organizations to report the news, so it’s a news story,” said Pate.

“The man died. Why did he die, was there negligence, what happened? And secondly, why is an international sports body trying to restrict the right of the public to see the story? And that made it a newsworthy item to write up.”

A spokesperson from the IOC told CBC News it had two main reasons for ordering that the luge video be taken down.

One is to protect the IOC’s exclusive rights and those of the official broadcasters. The other is the IOC feels it’s disrespectful to the Kumaritashvili family.

KSL.com in Salt Lake City Utah having infectious moment

According to KSL, a virus on their website was trying to get user credit card information. The virus came from an ad on the site.

A similar virus infected a newspaper in Minneapolis. Newspaper delivers virus to its readers.

In Salt Lake City, the TV station started getting calls from customers and IT managers on Wednesday and Thursday. Some State of Utah government sites blocked KSL.com when they discovered the virus.

The station is owned by Deseret Digital Media who assured users they had isolated the virus source. Apparently it was hidden in the 3rd party advertisement.

“First of all, we apologize,” Clark Gilbert station CEO said. “[Users] should know we’re taking every precaution we can to protect the site.”

If you were hit, you would have seen a pop-up ad for an antivirus software on your screen. Clicking on it asks you for your credit card number.

General Manager of KSL.com Brett Atkinson said, “It’s definitely something that’s coming through not our local advertisers, but some of the third parties that we work with that do send advertisers to us.”

“Unfortunately, it got through their filters and attacked us. We found the source of that and have been able to pause it, but it’s something we have to watch all the time just to be safe,” Gilbert said.
